"Peace and Happiness"

Jimi Hendrix photographed
in the summer of 1969, during his intense performance at the world-famous Woodstock Festival.

Jimi wowed the
peaceful, muddy, and exhausted audience of 30,000 people with his spiritually-electrified sounds. These fans had the stamina to weather the days of rain, thick mud, hours of music, long hikes to to fresh water, food, and bathrooms....all to see Jimi Hendrix close the festival. Most of the 400,000+ people who flocked to Bethel, New York had already packed up and began their journey home. But on Monday morning, the crowd that remained witnessed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows Band take music to a new level. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had recently broken up, with Noel Redding moving in his own direction. This reunited Jimi with an old Army paratrooper buddy, Billy Cox, on bass guitar. Mitch Mitchell stayed with Jimi, keeping 2/3 of The Experience intact. Adding to the new mix of musicians were Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, Juma Sultan on percussion, and Jerry Velez on congas.

Hendrix's Woodstock grooves, including his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, have been immortalized on the Woodstock album and the Woodstock film. In those early morning hours Jimi jammed, not only with his band, but with the vibe of the whole festival. The crowd had been peaceful all throughout the event, with a magical sense of brotherly love flowing through the air. As it floated into the stratosphere, Jimi Hendrix's music amplified that feeling for the entire world to feel forever.

His performance became one of legendary status. Jimi Hendrix soon became synonymous with Woodstock. That says a lot, considering that he was joined by Janis Joplin, Santana, Ritchie Havens, The Who. Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, Mountain, and many other fantastic musicians for the three day concert. Hendrix was the candle on that beautiful cake.

Woodstock marked a change in humanity and our modern civilization. The festival was a culmination of the crusades for civil rights, antiwar protests, and the musical revolution of the 1960's. Crowning the Woodstock Festival, Jimi Hendrix became a leader of the new movement. One of love, of peace, and of music. His Voodoo Child vibration has touched the entire globe and his influence on today's music is immeasurable.
